Here are our latest nature videos posted to our Captured Nature Channel YouTube Channel.

  • Replacing our black screen videos – Starting with the Frog Chorus

Last month YouTube informed us that our channel could no longer monetized because we were reusing other peoples videos on our channel. You know that is false because shoot and record all of our videos ourselves. However, even when we showed that, YouTube would come back to us and say “after a careful review we have determined that your channel is reusing other peoples videos without significantly changing them”. It turns out that this may have to do with our black screen videos and so now we are replacing our black screen videos – starting with the frog chorus video.

Despite there being two parts to a video – visual and audio, it looks like YouTube only looks at the visual aspect. They don’t seem to care what the commentary is in the audio. We know this because we created the black screen videos to have audio we recorded in nature play while viewers relaxed or even slept. The audio would be half of the video but even though it is different than other people’s videos, YouTube still claimed we were using other peoples content.

They wouldn’t tell us it was the black screen. In our appeals we specifically asked about black screens and all they would say was “after a careful review we have determined that you channel is reusing other peoples content”.

Monetization is key to our moving the channel forward as it helps pay for fuel and equipment to capture more scenes from nature in different places. That being said, spending hundreds if not thousands of hours capturing and creating content only to be told by strangers that we were using other peoples content was an insult.

As a result, we are going to slowly take down and replace our black screen videos with dark screens to meet the requirements and hopefully move the channel forward. This week we are starting with our most popular video, the Frog (peepers) chorus. This new video features the wetland that are home to these critters.

Join us for an aerial tour of a natural gem of the Quiet Corner of Connecticut – Bigelow Hollow State Park and Nipmuck State Forest. The park is located in the Quinebaug and Shetucket National Heritage Corridor and is part of a larger cluster of forests in what is referred to as the Last Green Mile between Washington and Boston.

On this aerial tour we see Mashapaug Pond at the northern end of Bigelow Hollow in Bigelow Hollow State Park. We then fly over Bigelow Pond and the Nipmuck State Forest on our way over Breakneck Pond. Bigelow Hollow sits in a big low valley which gives it its name and is surrounded hills. The evergreen forest is a cool place in summer with scenery similar to that of northern New England.

What happens when your road becomes a river? | White Water Flash Flood on a road –

When several inches of rain recently fell in less than an hour, it turned a local road into a white water after a flash flood. We were the last vehicle to make it down the road and after the rain stopped there were several large holes and washed out sections of road. This what a flash flood looks like!

We recorded this when we found ourselves in a sudden downpour on Rondeau Street in Palmer, MA in late summer 2021.

  • Nightly Frog (Peepers) Chorus – 10 Hours of Dark Screen

Please note, this video has been replaced with this video. The text below is for archive purposes.

Nightly Frog (Peepers) Chorus – 10 Hours of Dark Screen | Natural Sound –

Here is a 10 hour recording I made of frogs (peepers) nightly chorus. The video features a black screen to maximize its benefit for sleeping, study, relaxation, meditation or just to have something in the background with natural sound.

One night while we were camping at Bald Eagle State Park in Pennsylvania I heard these frogs and quickly grabbed my equipment and started recording. It was dark and there was nothing visually to record so I let the audio recording go. This video mimics what I heard and saw that night!

I made the recording using a Zoom H1N audio recorder using a custom binaural microphone setup that I built. The recording was done at Bald Eagle State Park in Pennsylvania.

  • How Maple Syrup is Made – The Maple Syrup Journey or A Journey of a Thousand Drops!

How Maple Syrup is Made – The Maple Syrup Journey or A Journey of a Thousand Drops! –

Every spring maple syrup producers set out on a journey to make maple syrup. The journey starts with tapping maple trees and the journey continues collecting the thousands of gallons of maple sap and pumping it over and over until it reaches the maple syrup evaporator. There the maple sap boils until it becomes syrup. The syrup is then filtered, re-heated and bottled before it reaches the table.

Take the journey with us on our farm and see how maple syrup is made, including tapping trees with primitive tools, listening to sounds of spring as sap drips in the buckets and flow into tanks. See how the evaporator is fired with a wood fire and boiled and how the canning process works in this journey or real maple syrup – the journey of a thousand drops!

This was recorded on our farm and around our area as we got ready for the maple season, tapped our trees and boiled our sap.

  • Maple syrup health benefits?

    Maple syrup health benefits?

Are there health benefits to real maple syrup? Here’s a video I did a couple of years ago looking at what research is showing.

    https://youtu.be/m9SxGKNEaKs

One example of research is an April 2016 study in Quebec showing that
maple syrup had potential benefits for ALS patients. The lab study
showed that worms who were fed a diet high in maple syrup had lower
incidents of ALS paralyzation. Of course humans can’t consume all that
sugar, but researchers felt the results were promising.

Maple syrup extracts have also been shown to improve the efficacy of
antibiotics. McGill researchers in 2015 released a study indicating
that maple syrup extracts when added to antibiotics could improve the
antibiotics efficacy. The researchers indicated the clinical trials
would need to be done but this was a good start.

In 2016 a group of researchers released a body of research at the
American Chemical Society’s annual meeting showing support for the
beneficial effects of natural products on neurodegenerative diseases,
like Alzheimer’s. The findings revealed the potential protective effect
maple syrup may have on brain cells against damage.

In another study, researchers analyzed the effects of maple syrup on the
cell proliferation, migration and invasion of colorectal cancer (or CRC)
cells in order to investigate whether maple syrup is suitable as a
phytomedicine for cancer treatment. CRC cells that were administered
maple syrup showed significantly lower growth rates than cells that were
    administered regular sucrose.

Maple syrup syrup researchers also found surprising results when it came
to the glycemic impact of maple syrup. At the International Society of
Nutrigenetics and Nutrigenomics annual meeting, researchers showed a
favorable link between maple syrup and metabolic health. They observed
a weak glycemic response to real maple syrup, which would be beneficial
at the metabolic level. Indeed, greater glycemic increases lead to
higher insulin demands, thereby contributing to pancreatic fatigue,
which in turn speeds up the development of type 2 diabetes.

Maple syrup also contains many antioxidants. If you looking for a
product to add antioxidants to your diet, maple syrup contains over 20,
13 of which can only be found in maple syrup.

As you can see, maple syrup is a complex sweetener and while more
research and studies are needed, the early results are promising. Your
purchase of real maple syrup from producers not can benefit you but
    others as well.

  • Amazing Maple Syrup Facts

    Amazing Maple Syrup Facts –

Here are some amazing facts about maple syrup that you may or may not know that I compiled. If there is a good response, I might put together some other videos as there are tons of amazing facts about maple syrup.

We produce maple syrup on our farm in northeastern Connecticut and have three generations of sugar makers on our farm!

    https://youtu.be/TozzueWuZpc
  • Maple Sugaring (maple syrup production) in the 1820s

Maple Sugaring (maple syrup production) in the 1820s –

In New England and other parts of northeastern North America maple syrup is produced each spring. Here’s some footage we shot of how they boiled the sap in the 1820s at Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge, MA.

In the 1800s we actually produced as much maple syrup as we did until about 10 years ago. Every farm would have a kettle and eventually an evaporator to boil the sap from maple trees to produce maple sugar. This was before sugar was widely available and it gave us sugar that could be used and produced right on the farm.

We continue the tradition ourselves on our farm but this gives us a glimpse of our past. Check out our maple sugaring videos showing our current operation.

    https://youtu.be/Zu7iViwb6y4
  • Maple Sugaring – Sweetening the pans on the evaporator

Here’s another video showing the inside story of how maple syrup is made.

Sugar makers often talk about “sweetening their pans”. We shot this video to show what that is all about. The raw sap comes in one portion but as more water is removed it is near syrup where it is drawn off.

In the video you can see that sap gets darker (we were making dark syrup this day) as it moves through the evaporator.

  • An Uplifting Message for You

An Uplifting Message for You | New England Seasonal Transitions – Here is a look at the transitions of seasons around a lake here in New England. Each season almost seems permanent once it is in place but we know that every season has its time. We certainly know that we are living through a special season of life and it too will pass so we leave you with an uplifting message that YOU, yes YOU, are created in this time and that God makes everything perfect in its time.

We shot this over several seasons in the hills above our home. When I blended the footage together I was so moved that I wanted to share it with you. I hope you find our footage as moving as we found it.
Peace be with you in this season!

Autumn Winds in New England | Binaural Audio and Natural Sound for Relaxation, Meditation –

This is 10 hours of natural autumn wind sound recorded in binaural audio for an immersive experience. The scene is a fall day on a quiet road and the leaves are rustling as they gust through the hills of New England.

We shot this in one of our favorite places. It’s fairly remote but there’s a maintained dirt road that goes on for miles. We parked along the side of the road and just started letting nature do its thing!

  • Aerial New England Fall Foliage

Last week I talked about how vibrant the foliage was popping here in New England and how busy we have been trying to capture scenes of nature with all the pretty reds, oranges, yellows along with blue skies and green lush evergreens. This week we compiled a video of aerial footage of the colors which make it look even more amazing! Set to classical and other music for a background, we take you over the forests but also fly over small villages with white steeple churches that New England is famous for. The hills are alive with color and seeing them from the air is the best way to do that.

  • Fall Waterfall Sounds

Among the scenes we’ve been capturing lately was a tiny waterfall flowing out of a beaver pond surrounded by autumn colors. It makes such a nice sound and I felt that the scene would make a great longer video that could be used as a background for ambience, relaxing or sleeping. This weeks video is a loop of the small waterfall for you to enjoy no matter what you need it for!

  • 2020 New England Fall Foliage Scenes

The leaves have been showing more color every day for the past few weeks and we’ve been out capturing different scenes showing what fall in New England looks like. We traveled down back roads and had a lot of early mornings to find the right scenes and I hope you enjoy what we have put together for you. This year the colors seem more vibrant than every. Maybe it’s just that we’ve spent more time inside this year than others but the reds, oranges and every other color that mother nature throws at us this time of year just seem more vibrant than every. We are truly blessed to live in this corner of the world!

  • Clouds with Wind Sounds

Who hasn’t laid down in a field and looked up and watched the clouds float by? Here’s a two hour video doing just that. Enjoy the crisp white clouds float against a cobalt blue sky while listening to the sound of wind. This video makes a great back drop for relaxation, meditation or any time you want something natural playing in the background.

  • Wind Sounds

One of the hardest sounds to capture authentically is wind. It’s also one of the softest and peaceful sounds if done right. We recently capture the sound of wind blowing through the autumn leaves. We know a lot of people have been enjoying our New England Night Chorus video which features a dark screen for sleeping or relaxing and this video too features a dark screen for sleeping or relaxing. It’s pure wind sound looped for 10 hours just for you!

  • Sunrise above the clouds!

Here’s a quick clip of the sunrise above the clouds! We were out filming for an upcoming video and were capturing the hills that formed islands while they valley’s filled with fog. It was right before dawn and the drone turned just in time to see the sun peak above the horizon. Enjoy this peaceful scene and stay tuned for the aerial video of the fall colors here in New England!

  • Barnyard Sights and Sounds

Here’s a video for anyone who grew-up on a farm or longs to be in the country and hear the sounds of barnyard animals. Watch and listen with us we swing wide the barn doors and release the chickens, ducks and turkey’s from their nightly roost to start their day frolicking in the barnyard. It’s quite a ruckus listening to all of them as they flood out the door and are given food and water to start their day. For those that grew-up on a farm this will bring back some memories and for those longing to be in the country put on some headphones and immerse yourself in this binaural audio recording of farm animals!

  • Real Fireplace with Natural Sound

With September coming to a close the weather starts getting colder and having a fire in a fireplace is something that we all look forward to. However, its not always possible to have a fire but having the ambiance is important. This video allows you to have a virtual fireplace going in the background or in the room while you go about your business. This video fireplace features natural sound of a roaring fire! If you listen carefully, you might also pickup the faint sound of a cock ticking off in the distance.

  • New England Lakes with Natural Sound

This week’s video includes segments looking over different lakes in New England. As with most of our videos we capture the natural sound at the time of recording instead of blending in bird sounds or music into the video. I hope you enjoy these peaceful scenes looking over water here in New England!

  • Sunrise over a New England Lake in Early Fall

As summer fades in New England there are some subtle changes that start occurring on the landscape. Most people think of our foliage but other things happen as well. As the temperature cools so does the land and water but they can often be slow to change. When the air is colder than the water fog can form on the water surface. When the air is still like it usually is before dawn it can be quick pretty.

At sunrise and sunset we often miss out on details that come and go by very quickly. Here is a video showing sunrise over a lake in New England in early fall shown in real time. This video has natural sound which allows you to be immersed in the scene and enjoy those details that you might normally miss. Watch how quickly the color in the sky comes and goes and even moves across the sky!

  • Bees Pollinating Flowers

Here’s another video showing something that we often take for granted – bees pollinating flowers. This is a one hour recording of bees pollinating the flowers on our hydrangea bush. The flowers were in peak bloom and bees were hitting just about everyone. You can even hear the bees buzzing the microphone from time to time. In the background we can see some clouds floating by.

  • Cows in a Meadow

Sometimes we dive by a farm and the cows in a meadow just become something in the background and we miss the beautiful details of cows just being cows eating their way across a meadow. This recording is of a group of cows doing just that – eating their way across a meadow. It gives us an opportunity to listen to the sounds of a meadow with cows in it as they make their way from one side to another.

I tried to edit the sound to eliminate some of the traffic sounds.

  • Summer Night Sounds of New England

There is a something special about evening and nightfall on a summer day in New England. When the sun sets the birds go to sleep and a chorus begins. It can become a background sound but when you stop to hear it it’s a special sound. This is a recording that we completed one summer evening using binaural microphones which gives you an immersive experience with headphones. The recording was extended to 10 hours to provide a background sound for someone looking for something to have on in the background for sleeping, relaxing or meditating.

To make this sound more enjoyable I’ve provided a dark black screen with the sound playing in the background.

  • More Bird Action – Hummingbirds!

Today we also released a video showing hummingbirds coming to our hummingbird feeder. It’s fascinating to watch these birds move and how they hover over the feeder while they feed. I wish I had a better lens to capture the long tongue in slow motion but perhaps one day. In the mean time, I hope you enjoy these hummingbirds feed!

  • July’s Trail Cam Video

We’re continuing our tradition of showing footage from our trail cam at what we call The Tree of Life. We call it the Tree of Life because of the wide variety of life that shows up around the base. We’ve seen dozens of types of critters and know that there will be others. In July we got our first glimpse of this years baby deer!

  • Our First Nature Video!

Today we published our first nature video! This morning we visited Bigelow Hollow State Park and surrounding areas and captured some scenes as the sun rose. We were greeting with canoe paddlers canoeing while fog rolled over the surface of the water. The sunlight trickled down through the forest canopy and provided some nice scenes on the forest floor. We also captured some water flowing in a rocky stream. It’s been dry so the water level is down but it still provides a nice sound.
